It sure is great to see the DOTS team safe and well in the Brisbane office today. We would all like to thank our clients and friends who sent us their thoughts and best wishes during the Brisbane flood crisis. Thankfully our team and their families have escaped injury and loss yet we all know friends and associates who have been impacted significantly by the floods. The big clean up has begun and it has been very heartening to see the spirit of voluntarism alive and well. If there can be a kernel of positivity out of this disaster it has been the igniting of community spirit and altruism.

I had a conversation with a client before Christmas who has done a great job implementing the DOTS LMS as part of a learning and compliance strategy in his organisation. The strategy has thus far been successful with attention and accolades from within the organisation and at senior management levels. Despite this he is wanting to do more and use e-learning to engage and inspire people. His ultimate goal is to nurture the seeds of an emerging culture that is far less draconian and command-control. I am going to help him break the shackles of the typical LMS utilisation model. In a previous post I discussed a client who executed a strategy to capture sales best practices by tapping directly into the minds of their own sales force and create online courses and libraries. How are we going to break the shackles in this case? By putting the power of content and collaboration in the hands of the people working in the organisation. An interesting thing happens when this is done. The early adopters are typically those who are well networked and or ‘mavens‘ in the organisation. This helps get buy in and engagement. In this project we are going completely lateral and engaging people to create content that is interesting to them. This is the stuff people do on weekends and after hours. We will end up with courses on yoga, fly fishing, stained glass and furniture restoration. We are going to create an opportunity for people to share the knowledge that is fueled by passion. We are setting up new course catalogues and libraries to support our new content. There will be content in PowerPoint, video clips, audio and plenty of photography. There are currently online courses on using tools like PowerPoint in DOTS so those who need to improve these skills will also be encouraged to do so. We are basically creating an ‘open university’ of shared learning for personal interest. People will be able to express themselves and others will be able to share in their passion and possibly engage more deeply on the interpersonal level. This is a fascinating project.

The employment market is tight in Australia. It is becoming more critical to manage the most critical supply chain keeping your business viable and growing…..qualified people. It is now critical that organisations have current data on competency and skill gaps, retention rates, resource planning and talent pools. In my experience most companies have succession plans for the senior executive management team. When one moves to line managers and below these succession plans are often not well documented if they exist at all. The good news it seems boards and executive management teams are demanding workforce analytics to support their strategic planning. A well developed online learning and talent project can deliver solutions for succession planning and retention of key staff. In our client base we have a number of clients effectively creating talent pools within the organisation. The talent pools are engaged in learning, development plans and collaboration with all areas of the business to ensure strong network links are forged on the interpersonal level. The senior managers are able to access reports that pinpoint skills gaps in the organisation. The individuals in the organisation are provided tools to take stewardship of their career paths. The use of online performance reviews is ensuring reviews are completed and the results are assessed and aligned with development of the individual.
